The Tilt-A-Whirl Effect!
Aug. 23, 2010
You know when you get off a spinning ride like the Tilt-a-Whirl and your body still feels like it's spinning? That’s what the past couple of days have been like for me! After a whirlwind August full of State Fair followed directly by Jag Lake, being at home for a couple days is a completely foreign concept to me! I’m slowly becoming more accustomed to it, but missing my teammates already!
As promised in Samantha’s blog, I want to introduce you all to the newest addition to my farm; two ducklings named Bert and Ernie! Bert and Ernie came from the Discovery Barnyard at the State Fair. They traveled the 5 hours home from Milwaukee with Samantha and me, and were able to make friends with all sorts of people along the way. The worker at a Kwik Trip we stopped at even got to hold them – the first time he’s ever held a duck, he said! Bert and Ernie are already growing by leaps and bounds, but I’ll be sure to post some pictures of them soon!
Jag Lake was an awesome retreat for our team, and it gave us a chance to spend more time together as well as get a lot accomplished for the beginning of the school year. In between working on workshops, speeches, and t-shirt designs, we took the rowboats across the lake, went on a late night swim, and of course, ate LOTS of food!
It's A Scorcher!
Aug. 13, 2010
With over 100 degree weather the last couple of days, State Fair sure is heating up! Big Foot FFA has braved the heat though, and it’s been great to work with them at Discovery Barnyard. Marshfield FFA will be helping us wrap up the rest of the fair… it’s hard to believe that there are only a couple days left!
The State FFA Band and Choir have also arrived to entertain fair goers for the duration of the fair, and they're bringing excitement everywhere they go!
Go Veggies Go!
Aug. 11, 2010
Hey everyone! It’s been a busy State Fair for the state officer team! It’s Day 7 and time has been flying. We’ve already got to work with Suring and Lodi FFA. It was hard to say goodbye to Lodi yesterday, but Big Foot is now here and ready to work! The Discovery Barnyard is packed with strollers, families and fairgoers excited to learn about agriculture and see all sorts of animals.
We also get to host Veggie Races in the Ag Oasis every day. Singing the “Veggie Song” and yelling “GO VEGGIES GO!” is a great way to pump kids up as they race veggie cars down the track. We race every 15 minutes, and everyone gets a ribbon, so stop by to check it out if you’re around the fair!
As far as food goes, I’ve enjoyed a tasty deep fried Snickers bar, and yesterday was CRAZY GRAZIN’ day, so there was lots of deep fried goodness (including CHOCOLATE COVERED BACON!) at super cheap prices! Be sure to stop in and say hi to any of the officers you see if you’re around the fair this week!
A Sesquicentennial Celebration!
Aug. 03, 2010
This past week has been a relaxing one that has given the team a chance to rest up and do laundry in order to head to the State Fair tomorrow! While I enjoyed some time in the sun and visiting with high school and college friends, it was also a pretty cool week in my town. Barron celebrated its 150th birthday!
There were all sorts of festivities all week, from fireworks to concerts to a Grand Parade Sunday. It was amazing to see all of the people who came out to support the town. It also made me think – As hundreds gathered up and down our Main Street and even more piled on to the Courthouse lawn to watch the parade, or people streamed in from out of town to attend the All-Year High School Reunion… Those founding members of the community had no idea the kind of impact they would still have over 150 years later. The same is true with our impact. While we may not be founding any towns in the near future, our impact still has the ability to extend long beyond us. So what are you doing today that people will remember in the future?
Farm Tech Days and Heart Walk!
Jul. 24, 2010
This past week, the team and I ventured to River Falls for Farm Technology Days. I was so excited to go back to River Falls, because I just finished my freshman year there this spring, and it’s just now dawning on me that I won’t be going back this fall! It was great to get to see the town and campus again. Farm Technology Days went over amazingly well, with lots of sun time while we gave tours of the Peterson Farm Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday brought lots of rain, and in the end, the closing of the show a day early. A huge thank you to the Westberg family for hosting Samantha and I, and all of the host families for making our week go smoothly! Today, I had the privilege of going to the New Auburn Heart Walk, which benefits both the American Heart Association and New Auburn FFA. There was a great turn out, and I got to meet with some amazing members. Miranda, Courtney, Nicole, Drew and I had a great time walking the one mile, and we all marveled at everyone who ran the three mile! Thanks again to the New Auburn FFA for inviting me!

Before today, I’d never stepped foot on a golf course that wasn’t covered with snow ( I was on my high school cross country ski team, so I spent a lot of time on our golf course skiing in the winter). However, today I got to experience the Wisconsin FFA Foundation Northern Golf Outing. I spent the day on a golf course that I could actually see green grass on and didn’t need to dress in layers to experience, and had an awesome time! Samantha also helped me out by explaining some of the basics of golf, so by the end of the day I even knew a little golf lingo! So many wonderful people came out to support the FFA and all of them brought great personalities and stories to share. There were even some “celebrity” golfers – WAXX 104.5 brought a team, and Bob Bolsold also helped run much of the reception and program. It was fun to get to put a face with the voices that I listen to all the time on the radio! Basically, it was a great day out in the sun enjoying time with some of the people who support FFA to make it the amazing organization that we all love!

Destination: Springfield!
Jul. 12, 2010
The weeks are just flying by already! Late Friday night, we arrived home from an awesome week at NLCSO (National Leadership Conference for State Officers). The week was filled with learning about workshop presentations, ag issues, and connecting and growing more as a team. We also got to get to know the Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Illinois State Officer Teams, as well as Alex Henry and Chelsea Doss, two of the national officers. Throughout the week we all shared many laughs and made some great friendships. We also got to do a little sightseeing in Springfield and took in the Lincoln Presidental Museum and Lincoln’s home. Did you know that many of Lincoln’s famous stovepipe hats were made of beaver? There were so many cool facts to learn about such an awesome president. It was definitely one of my favorite museums I’ve ever been to! Overall, the week was an awesome one filled with memories that will last a lifetime and of course, lots of good food!
Check out the picture with this blog to see us chilling at Lincoln’s home!

And the State Theme is....
Jul. 02, 2010
What a week!
Bright and early Sunday morning, I set out with Tristan (yes, that’s my car’s name, and if you ever get to meet him, you will agree that he is definitely a Tristan) to Colby. From there, Anna and I ventured over to Section 8 and got to experience the Shawano County “Brunch on the Farm”, which Sam proudly showed off to us. After filling up on brunch and ice cream, we headed to Madison for the Wisconsin Association of Agricultural Educators (WAAE) Conference.
Monday through Thursday, our days were jam packed with meetings, brushing up on FFA knowledge and programs, and the beginning stages of planning for Sectional Leadership Workshops and FIRE Conference. We got a ton accomplished, but didn’t forget to take time out for a little fun! Monday was Noah’s birthday, so we had a fun night of mini golf and Red Robin (which I’d never been to before!).
Wednesday night we got to mingle with advisors at the WAAE Banquet, where the 2010-2011 State FFA Theme was announced. The state officer team is excited to announce that this year’s theme is: Powered by Potential!
It was a great week for the team to get things accomplished, and get to know the advisors that help make Wisconsin FFA the awesome association that it is! Sam, Anna and I finished off the week with an impromptu “Adventure in Appleton” (we weren’t lost, I promise... just hungry!) on the drive home, and now after finally arriving back in Section 1, I’m excited to watch some fireworks and get packing for next week’s trip to Springfield, IL for National Leadership Conference for State Officers (NLCSO).
Hope everyone takes the time out to enjoy the gorgeous weather and holiday weekend!

3...2...1... BLAST-Off!
Jun. 25, 2010
The rest of the team and I just returned from a week of BLAST-Off (Building Leaders and Strong Teams of Officers) training at Spencer High School. We ate a lot, slept a little, and most importantly, got a ton accomplished as a team! We learned about creating mission statements, working with our strengths, writing and presenting speeches, and were given some gifts that will be very important to our year as state officers: Coveys and our very first Association jackets! Our Franklin Coveys will be very important in fine tuning our time management skills this year, and our nice crisp new jackets make us look and feel so much more like a team. Overall, it was a great week where we all got to know each other better and got a great start on our year!

Hey Wisconsin FFA!
Jun. 20, 2010
Hey Wisconsin FFA!
First and foremost, I’d like to tell you just how excited this year’s state officer team is to get the year going and make it an awesome year for all of you! We leave bright and early Monday morning to start BLAST-Off, where we’ll get to know each other better and get started on planning out the year’s activities!
To give you some background on me, I grew up on a 60 cow dairy farm with my parents and three older siblings. I raised my own herd of meat goats as part of my SAE, and also own my own Guernseys and Jerseys. I finished my freshman year at UW-River Falls this spring, where I am majoring in Food Science.
I can’t wait to get this year underway and start meeting with all of the awesome Wisconsin FFA members!
