Wow!
Sep. 01, 2010

The first of September, WOW!! I can’t believe that it’s already September and school is starting! I hope everyone had a great first day back to school. Although my high school days are past, I found myself waking up at 4 this morning to head to the first day of school in Mauston. The state officer team assembled to make SLW and FIRE props! We had a great day spray painting and practicing skits. Thank you to the Mauston agriculture education department for hosting us!

My newsletter have been sent so be sure to keep a look out for the first volume of “News FOUR You!”

Enjoy the rest of the week!!

What a Week!
Aug. 29, 2010

We are respected. We are valued. We are strong. We are skilled.

These are some attributes of GROWMARK that I learned while at the GROWMARK Annual Meeting. Anna, Alicia, Mr. Hicken, and I had a great time staying at the Chicago Hilton. We were joined by state officers from Illinois and Iowa, as well as youth representatives from Ontario. We learned about the GROWMARK system, met new people, and heard from the Olympic Gold Medalist, Mike Eruzione.

Today, the state officers and their families headed to Walworth for the State Presidents Picnic. We met at Alicia’s house for a fun afternoon of Frisbee throwing, piñata hitting, and road tripping. We went down the road a half mile to the Illinois state line to take some fun photos of us being in two places at once! It was wonderful to meet my teammates’ families.

As GROWMARK defines themselves with the aforementioned words, FFA can also be described with these words. As school starts and life gets even busier remember that you are part of an organization that is respected, valued, strong, and skilled!

Have an excellent week!
-Julie

GROWMARK!
Aug. 25, 2010

After a short break, I’m off and running again! These past few days have been nice to catch up with everything at home. I was able to catch up on sleep, help do chores, and work on my newsletter (keep a lookout for it!). I also worked with my pigs, Archer and Kidd Carney, who I will be showing this weekend at the 75th Fennimore Jr. Fair. Although the break has been nice, I am now at Alicia’s house before we head to Chicago in the morning. Anna, Alicia, and I will be attending the GROWMARK Annual Meeting. I am very excited to see what GROWMARK is doing as part of the agricultural industry and to represent Wisconsin FFA there! I hope everyone enjoys there last few days before school starts and I can’t wait for Chapter Visits!! Have a great week!

Jag Lake
Aug. 22, 2010

Once the Wisconsin State Fair ended, the state officers were heading to beautiful Jag Lake! I have never been there before and the entire experience took my breath away! Throughout the week, we worked on planning for the year, from SLW’s to FIRE to Chapter Visits! We also took some time to take a boat ride on the lake and drove up to the UP to see the Paulding Light. It was so much fun and made us all even more excited for our year ahead!

Discovery Barnyard
Aug. 15, 2010

At the State Fair, there are people everywhere. Many of them do not know the importance of agriculture or how well farmers care for their animals and the land. The Discovery Barnyard allows misconceptions to be cleared up. State officers and other members from various chapters answer questions and give ink stamps. We also help “give vaccines” to stuffed animals and help people listen to their heart beat, as well as a stuffed cow's! It has been great learning about others opinions and educating them about our great industry.

What Time Is It? VEGGIE TIME!!
Aug. 14, 2010

Racing veggie cars down the track is a memory I hold dear. I remember standing in line to race the veggies as a young child and winning the race a few years back. However, being the one standing on the other side of the rope, holding a microphone will even be more engrained in my mind. Everything from creating and decorating a new car to handing out the red, white, and blue winning ribbon to a lucky kid gives a wonderful feeling. It’s been an excellent experience being part of the Veggie 500 Pit Crew!

State Fair Fun!
Aug. 10, 2010

The state officers are really enjoying the joys of Wisconsin State Fair’s Veggie Races and Discovery Barnyard. Whether it is yelling “Go Veggies Go” or answering questions to curious fair-goers, it is a blast. I also am showing my sheep this week. If you are up at State Fair be sure to come visit us!!!

Enjoy the rest of the week!

Cream Puffs and Veggie Races and FFA Members, OH MY!!!

The one and only Wisconsin State Fair is coming: August 5-15!! State Officers will enjoy sharing agriculture to children of all ages through Veggie Races and the Discovery Barnyard! I am excited to meet many members during the upcoming two weeks! If you are at state fair remember to come visit us in the Ag Oasis or the Discovery Barn. If you are wondering how to be young at heart, race in the Veggie 500!

Hope to see you there!!!

Young at Heart
Jul. 28, 2010

Last night I found myself thinking, “I love being nineteen!” But then I realized that it wasn’t being nineteen that I loved, it was that I was still young at heart. Last night I played on a merry-go-round, slid down a slide and even went up and down on a teeter-totter! I wasn’t babysitting, I was just having fun with some friends.

This got me thinking. Wouldn’t it be great if just every once in a while we took a break from our age and stepped back into when we were younger? Maybe read our favorite bedtime story, color a picture, or, as I did, play on a playground.

It is often said that children see the innocence and peace of the world. I believe that we can see like a child again if we take time to breathe in and do those fun activities we once enjoyed so much!

Farm Technology Days
Jul. 25, 2010

“Spanning four generations this year’s Farm Technology Days host farm, the Peterson Family Dairy, is all about family.”

This is the start of the tour script for Farm Technology Days farm tours that the state officer team had the opportunity to give. After two days of giving tours, you start to memorize the script! I also had the chance to help with the State Land and Soil Evaluation Contest. Congratulations to all who participated! It was great to see many chapters representing Section Four! Even through the rain, Farm Technology Days was a great success and a lot of fun!

This weekend I enjoyed my last time showing at the famous Blake's Prairie Jr. Fair. Along with showing I watched the Combine Demolition Derby and got to see many FFA members! Today I read after taking care of my sheep and [successfully] avoided the annual water fight! I also shed a few tears as I put my wether, Achilles, on the trailer to go to the processing plant. :( All in all it was a good fair but I will certainly miss showing
there!!!

A little bit of knowledge:
July 20: Land and Soils Evaluation is awesome!
July 21: We lost a very great person and agriculture advocate today: Rod Nilstestuen.
July 24: A Combine Demolition Derby is so much fun to watch.
July 25: The best way to avoid a water fight is to stay in the barns and near the parents!

Have a great week!

Family Time
Jul. 18, 2010

"The family is one of nature's masterpieces." ~George Santayana

My weekend has been filled with family time! On Saturday my family went up to the Dane County Fair. It was great to see the exhibits of the 4-H and FFA members, as well as seeing a teammate, Cory! We really enjoyed watching square dancing and it brought back memories for me when I learned how to square dance! It's been a while so don't expect me to teach anybody!! :)

Sunday was filled with chores, church, and a relaxing break on a beach on the muddy Mississippi!! After night chores on the farm, we finished out the night with a picnic!

As the quote said that family is one of nature's masterpieces, so is agriculture!! This week, wherever you may be, share this masterpiece with others. As the state officers enjoy Farm Technology Days, all of us as FFA members can share our story and teach the world about this amazing masterpiece!

Enjoy the week and be sure to tell your story about agriculture and FFA!!!

Powered by Potential
Jul. 14, 2010

It was amazing to see what agriculture teachers around the state do as they came together for WAAE Professional Development Conference. The highlight of the week was the announcement of the state theme….Powered by Potential!!! For the state officers, it was a week filled with planning and learning more about our organization. After a productive week, we were then able to enjoy Independence Day weekend at home.

Shortly after WAAE ended, our next adventure began. In a big white van and a mini-van, the team ventured down to Springfield, Illinois for NLCSO (National Leadership Conference for State Officers). This week was packed full with team building activities and meeting state officers from four other states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Missouri. We started to develop workshops and learned about the other states’ associations. We also visited the Abraham Lincoln Museum in Springfield which was a lot of fun and interesting!

Currently, I am at home for a week, and it’s been quite eventful already. So far during my week away from the team, I first had my wisdom teeth taken out! I also spent some time with my friends and family! It’s strange to be away from the team, but I’m looking forward to our next event, Farm Technology Days in River Falls! Hope to see some of you there!

As for what I've learned, here are some highlights!

July 5: There are a lot of mosquitoes around the Illinois FFA Center.

July 6: Walt Disney’s Vision Statement is “To make people happy!”

July 7: How to dance like you are on Step Up.

July 14: After three days of eating Jell-O, pudding and mashed potatoes, I am ready for some real food!!

Have a great week!!

BLAST-Off and WAAE
Jun. 29, 2010

Wow! It has been only two weeks since Wisconsin FFA members joined together for the opening session of state convention! How time flies! Hope you all are enjoying your summer! The state officers have been busy and enjoying every minute!

Last week we ventured up to Spencer to attend BLAST-Off (Building Leaders and Strong Teams of Officers). This week we are attending the Wisconsin Association of Agricultural Educators (WAAE) Professional Development Conference in Madison. We have come together as a team and are even more excited about serving our amazing association!

Thinking about what I have learned is difficult- there is just so much! I will try to highlight a few!
June 22: The grass near the Spencer agriculture room floods when it rains!
June 24: Team photos are a blast!
June 25: A lot about cooperatives!
June 27: Be sure to leave early enough to get lost when driving in Madison!
June 29: “Leaders aren't born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work.” -Vince Lombardi
Enjoy the rest of the week!

Greetings!
Jun. 20, 2010

Greetings Wisconsin FFA! I would first like to tell you how excited I am about the upcoming year! I can’t wait to serve and get to know all of you!

To introduce myself, I am Julie Orth and I hail from the Fennimore FFA in Section 4. I grew up on my family’s diversified livestock farm where our main focus is our 200-cow Jersey herd. I raised my own sheep as part of my SAE and showed in 4-H.We also have chickens, beef, and pigs. My favorite FFA speaking contest is Prepared and favorite CDE is Meats Evaluation. I also participated in Job Interview, Creed Speaking, Quiz Bowl, Wildlife Judging, Dairy Products, and Livestock Judging. I recently finished my first year at UW-Madison where I am majoring in Animal Science with plans of becoming a 4-H Youth Development Agent.

While in college, I wrote down something I learned almost every day. This may have been an interesting quote, a thought I had, or something I actually learned in the classroom. I hope to continue this by sharing something that I learn as a State FFA Officer on this blog. What I have learned so far:
June 17, 2010: Eleven = One
One team, One year, One adventure.
June 19, 2010: You may need to go to three different locations of one store in order to find the perfect skirt in the perfect size!

Throughout my year of service I hope to get to know more about the amazing opportunities that FFA offers and most of all serve you, the member.

Sincerely,
Julie Orth
Wisconsin Association of FFA Vice President
