Jag Lake
Aug. 25, 2010
This time last week the state officer team was starting our retreat to Jag Lake at the FFA's cabin. During our time there we planned for SLW's, FIRE Conference, Chapter Visits and the year ahead. We also had time for fun and went out on the lake swimming or on paddle boat!
Some of my favorite memories are of the meals that our team prepared for each other. I was happy that many members of the team had cooking skills and compensated for those of us that are lacking in that area.
After this last week we all know what needs to be done and are ready to move forward to all of our fall engagements. This week will be spent pulling together loose ends and preparing for our team workshop preparation day in Mauston on the first. Hopefully everyone is enjoying the last of summer and gearing up for the year ahead!
Enjoy the sun!

Final Fair Day
Aug. 15, 2010
The last 12 days at the State Fair have been full to say the least! While here we made many good memories and developed more skills that will help our Association in the year ahead. My last area to work at State Fair is the Veggie Races. I would like to mention that one car shined above the rest this week and that was the Brussel Sprout car! While some underestimated the speed of the small car it won just about every race it was in.
A big thank you to the members of the Big Foot and Marshfield FFA Chapters for their work in the Discovery Barnyard. Also I would like to mention our excellent FFA Band and Chorus that performed in the Ag. Oasis. The band and chorus sounded superb and I enjoyed listening every time they performed!
This week starting Tuesday the officer team will be at Jag Lake for our officer retreat. I am especially looking forward to having my teammates cooking for each other for all of our meals. I will keep you posted on how our retreat goes!
Day 7 at State Fair!
Aug. 10, 2010
What a week it has been here at the Wisconsin State Fair! I have had a total of four cream puffs and lots of other tasty food including ice cream sundaes from the Washington County FFA Chapters stand in the Ag. Products Pavilion .
At Discovery Barnyard the past few days the Lodi FFA Chapter has been volunteering. Myself and the state officer team are impressed with the Lodi members that worked hard and even came in extra early to do chores in the morning! The next chapter working with us at the barnyard will be the Big Foot FFA.
I have also had the opportunity to work at the Veggie 500 in the Ag. Oasis! The past few days I have been building some winning cars including a butternut squash and a zucchini car. If you are at state fair be sure to stop by because we race every 15 minutes.

What is delicious and starts with the word cream and ends with the word puff? A cream puff! Just yesterday the officer team got cream puffs the day before the state fair started and were they ever delightful! During state fair the officer team works at the Discovery Barnyard and the Veggie Races in the Ag Oasis. I had my first shift at Discovery Barnyard just this morning and was happy to see so many young kids learning more about the animals that bring us the products we use everyday.
Also on staff at Discovery Barn are members of FFA Chapters. It was great to get to know several of the Suring FFA Chapter members who I worked with this morning! Best of luck to those showing at the fair this year and hope to see many of you as the fair goes by!
A NICE Week!
Jul. 28, 2010
Last week Sam, Laura, Alicia and I attended the NICE Conference in Knoxville, Tennessee at the University of Tennessee. Since Knoxville is a distance away we flew there and this was my first time ever flying! The four day conference was based on cooperatives and how we can use them to benefit our communities. I had never been to a cooperatives conference before so it was a totally new experience. I would encourage members to take advantage of the Coops Yes! Conference held right here in Wisconsin. At the NICE Conference the participants were split into groups for simulations that taught us more about the workings of cooperatives.
On Monday of the Conference we went to Dollywood! I was able to overcome some of my fear of roller coasters and got to have some bonding time with my teammates. Also while at NICE I interviewed to be the Outstanding Male Youth Scholar and was selected as that person. This means that next year I will have the opportunity to be a group leader just like Alicia was this year!
On Wednesday we flew back and stayed the night at an excellent host family in River Falls so we could give tours at the Farm Technology Days Farm. On Thursday the show was rained out so the team did not give any tours. It was a memorable day and we will not soon forget how hard it was to stay dry!
NLCSO
Jul. 11, 2010
What a week in Springfield! This past week our team attended the National Leadership Conference for State Officers in Springfield, Illinois with four other state officer teams from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Missouri. Along with picking up a funny accent we gained skills that will be beneficial this year in developing workshops and working as a team. Also on Wednesday we went to the Abraham Lincoln Museum and learned all about one of our nation's great leaders.
Just yesterday at the Sauk County Fair I was fortunate enough to be a contestant in the Celebrity Cream Puff Eating Contest, thanks to Mr. Hicken! Although I did not win the competition I did enjoy a cream puff and this should prepare me for state fair where Noah and I have pledged to eat a cream puff a day!
WAAE Conference
Jul. 02, 2010
What a week! The team spent the week in Madison at the Wisconsin Association of Agricultural Educators (WAAE) Professional Development Conference. During the conference we had time to plan for the upcoming Sectional Leadership Workshops, FIRE Conference and State Fair. In preparation for the Wisconsin State Fair (August 5-15) we learned how to make veggie cars and even got to race them! I am proud to say that the team of Sam, Noah and myself won both races with our zucchini car. Finalizing this year’s theme was another item of business and for the 2010-2011 year the Wisconsin Association of FFA will be Powered By Potential! Next week we will be in Springfield, Illinois for NLCSO (National Leadership Conference for State Officers) along with officer teams from surrounding states.
Week #1
Jun. 27, 2010
The team finished BLAST Off training this past week and had a great time in Spencer! We learned more not only about ourselves but also about the other members of our team. One moment that really sticks out to me was when we received our new jackets. It was an amazing feeling to put on the new corduroy jacket and take some pictures with my team.
On Friday the new and old team had the opportunity to volunteer at the USDA Dairy Workshop in Madison. We all learned more about the issues in the dairy industry today and also met with Secretary of Agriculture Mr. Tom Vilsack.
Today the team will be in Madison at the WAAE conference where we will be planning for the year ahead and meeting with agricultural instructors from across the state. I am looking forward to seeing the team and getting to know some new faces!
